6.5 mm above the lower/upper plate for solar panels

6.5 mm above the lower/upper plate for solar panels

Postby Gauthier P » Wed Nov 26, 2008 6:07 am

We need some informations about solar panels. Is it possible to use solar panels 6.5 mm taller than the upper or the lower plate?
The acceptance checklist allows only a width of 100+/-0.1mm for the sides but we would like use panels as shown in page 2 of solar panels clips datasheets. Could you confirm this possibility?
Thanks a lot.

The CubeSat Design Specification (CDS -- see www.cubesat.org) permits components of up to 6.5mm height normal to each of the six faces of a CubeSat.

So, yes, you can put panels of up to 6.5mm thickness on any of the six faces of our CubeSat Kits. The Solar Panl Clips are designed to engage / hold panels whose PCB / edge thickness (where the Clips contact it) is 0.062" / 1.6mm.

Dear aek,

I am not sure you fully understand my question. In fact, we would like to know if it is possible use to solar panels 6.5 mm TALLER than the UPPER or the LOWER plate?
The acceptance checklist (from CDS) allows only a HEIGHT of 100+/-0.1mm but panels shown in page 2 of solar panels clips datasheets allows 6mm TALLER. Could you confirm this possibility?
Thanks a lot for your collaboration.

We wouldn't show it if it were not permitted ... so yes, side panels can be "6.5 mm TALLER than the UPPER or the LOWER plate".

Just keep 0.5mm away from the extremes of the top and bottom of the CubeSat and you'll be OK. The point of this specification in the CDS is to avoid contact with neighboring CubeSats, and with the P-POD itself.
