Running embedded Linux on PC/104?

The current / premier issue of Embedded Linux Journal highlights the MZ104 SBC from Tri-M, an all-in-one embedded Linux solution.

How much interest is there in being able to readily accomodate such a board in the CubeSat?

The only real problem we see right now w/regard to PC/104 integration is those headers on the sides -- there isn't room for them. But PC/104 boards that do not extend beyond the 3.55" x 3.575" board outline should be OK.

The PIC on the mainPCB would appear to PC/104 modules as an addressible 8-bit device on the ISA bus.

The other issue would be power -- for 5V systems, PC/104 calls for 2A, which is asking a lot of a CubeSat.

Has anyone looked further into this? This looks like an interesting computing payload. Cheers, Chris

Pumpkin + SSDL worked together to fly the TMZ-104 on the first (two?) BioLaunch missions. SOmewhat concurrent to that, I found a much better PC/104 SBC -- The Lippert Cool Lite Runner 2 (http://www.lippert-at.com -- sometimes their website has problems). This is a much better solution, with a host of improvements over the TMZ-104. The most important one (and one that makes it unique among PC/104 SBCs, as best I can tell) is that none of its peripheral connectors extend over the 90x96mm form factor of PC/104. So it fits perfectly within a CubeSat Kit. It also has USB 2.0, built-in CF socket for HDD (CF as HDD), Ethernet, video, etc. BioLaunch 3 and later have been using it to great success.
