I completely understand and appreciate your first point. We have similar complexities with our build process.

One architecture per build tree is not an unreasonable constraint albeit maybe a little wasteful in terms of disk space.

Having a development tree and using command line tools work just fine for me and probably most Linux developers I'd guess. So a sophisticated installer will not necessarily be missed.

If I can untar it and run make in a few directories that will work fine.

I'll contact Colin tomorrow. Knowing that someone already has it working is great news.
